Foundation Art: Art Class for Primary School (Ages 7–10)

The Foundational Art Programme is the most popular programme in Artgrain, and rightly so. It is a fun, yet educational programme which teaches students all the right skills they will need to blossom into a wonderful artist. Although students will be practicing mainly acrylic painting, the programme will also allows students to try out a wide variety of both dry and wet mediums!

Our art classes for primary school children in Singapore build real technical skill from age 7. Foundation Art — Artgrain's most popular programme — teaches children to draw from observation, understand form, tone and texture, and paint confidently in acrylic while exploring dry and wet mediums. Through themes like still life, landscape and animals, students develop composition skills and a working knowledge of different art styles and movements.

What is Artgrain's Foundation Art programme?

Foundation Art is our structured art class for primary school children aged 7 to 10, and the most popular programme at Artgrain. Students mainly work in acrylic painting while building the core skills of drawing, observation and composition.

What will my child learn in Foundation Art?

Children learn to draw observationally — understanding form and capturing tone and texture — and are introduced to acrylic painting and the basic elements of art. They also learn composition and conceptualisation techniques to plan their own artworks.

What art mediums does my child use?

Students work mainly in acrylic painting, and also try a wide variety of both dry and wet mediums across the programme.

Does my child need previous art experience?

No. Foundation Art is designed to lay the groundwork for later art-making, starting from the building blocks of art and painting. Classes are individualised, and teachers customise references to each child's ability and interests.

What subjects or themes will my child paint?

Students progress through a series of themes including still life, landscapes and animals, developing observational skill and control of the medium while exploring different artistic styles and art movements.
